About Nonimage

Andy LobbanHi. I’m Andy Lobban. I run the one-man design studio Nonimage. Since 2007, Nonimage has helped a wide range of clients market their products to their intended audiences through clean, beautiful design solutions.

I realise that commissioning design work of any kind can be a big deal, so I’m here to make it as straightforward as possible. I listen to you talk about your business, and research your markets to allow me to create relevant solutions. Take a look at my portfolio for examples of my web, print and branding work. I love what I do. I love to create.

Web work

I speak client. I build websites that look great, are enjoyable to use and are easy to update. I can work with you to create a site from an initial concept, redesign an existing site, or can work with your developers to put a clean, beautiful face on your system.

I combine strong visual design skills with a deep knowledge of front end code and wealth of experience with content management systems. I can help you with your entire web project from design to frontend development to hosting.

I design for people, not machines.

I speak geek. I can create research-based, readable user interfaces on top of semantic XHTML and CSS with a dash of Javascript, all powered by my CMS of choice, WordPress. I adhere to best practice accessibility and the latest W3C standards guidelines. I hand code my sites from scratch. I am an active member of the Edinburgh web community.

Print work

Print design is what originally attracted me to visual design. The web is exciting, but there is nothing quite like holding a printed product in your hands. My print design is informed by a good understanding of colour theory, grid systems and typography.

I speak printer. Having studied printing and print finishing techniques at university, I understand the processes which go into a final printed product. I maintain close relationships with a variety of printers, and make regular visits to view work and find out about the latest techniques.

Combining my web and print skills, I can create a complete identity for your company or product, from logos to colour schemes to websites, advertising and printed promotional materials.

What my clients think

“I was apprehensive about creating such a complete and appropriate identity for our young company with no experience of branding. However, Nonimage worked closely with us and got to know our business and our customer base, and created an overall brand that it reflects the company and speaks to our target audience.”

“I have worked with Andrew on a number of occasions and have been very impressed with the results. He has a strong grasp of design for the web and consistently comes up with progressive, stylish design. His strong CSS skills along with an ability to work face to face with clients make him a great asset to a web project.”

“The work that Andy at Nonimage has put into the development of our website is directly responsible for the level of traffic it sees. It is the attention to detail, constant flow of communication and second-to-none after-care that sets Nonimage apart from the other design companies with whom we have worked in the past.”

I moved from Aberdeen to Edinburgh in 1999 to study Graphic Communication at Napier University, where I graduated in 2004 with a BA Hons degree. While at university, I started working for various small clients, mostly in the music and hospitality industries.

After working for a publisher in Edinburgh for three years, I needed a new challenge. I decided to go it alone in April 2007, and I’ve never looked back.

Since then I have worked for a wide variety of clients since then, from small startup businesses to national corporations. I have experience working alone as well as part of a team, or sub-contracting for creative agencies.

When I’m not designing cool stuff for clients, I like to do other creative things. I go to see live music obsessively. I prefer vinyl to CD or digital music. I run an online music video project. I co-founded a small record label. I love to take photos, mostly with Lomo cameras. You can see all my projects and my online social network activity at AndyLobban.com.
